چکیده

The Evolution of Inequality, Heterogeneity and Uncertainty in Labor Earnings in the U.S. Economy A large empirical literature documents a rise in wage inequality in the American economy. It is silent on whether the increase in inequality is due to greater heterogeneity in the components of earnings that are predictable by agents or whether it is due to greater uncertainty faced by agents. Applying the methodology of Cunha, Heckman, and Navarro (2005) to data on agents making schooling decisions in different economic environments, we join choice data with earnings data to estimate the fraction of future earnings that is forecastable and how this fraction has changed over time. We find that both predictable and unpredictable components of earnings have increased in recent years. The increase in uncertainty is substantially greater for unskilled workers. For less skilled workers, roughly 60% of the increase in wage variability is due to uncertainty. For more skilled workers, only 8% of the increase in wage variability is due to uncertainty. Roughly 26% of the increase in the variance of returns to schooling is due to increased uncertainty. Using conventional measures of income inequality masks the contribution of rising uncertainty to the rise in the inequality of earnings for less educated groups. JEL Classification: D3, J8

Matching, Heterogeneity, and the Evolution of Income Distribution

This paper analyzes a model in which firms and workers have to engage in costly search to find a production partner, and endogenizes the skill, job, and wage distributions in this context. The presence of search frictions implies that there are two redistributive forces in the labor market. The first is mismatch relative to the Walrasian economy; skilled workers tend to work with lower physical...

The Impact of International Migration on the Economy with the Assumption of Labor Heterogeneity

T his study investigated the effect of international labor migration on Iran’s economy using a neo-classical growth model with the assumption of labor heterogeneity within the framework of dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model. After solving the model, the obtained equations were linearized and different values were assigned to the parameters according to Iran’s economy inform...

The Effects of China's Growth in Manufacturing Sector in the U.S. Economy

T his paper investigates the gain of bilateral trade between China and U.S. in manufacturing sectors when both countries play a role in asymmetric (biased) growth of  international trade. Our model includes a special case of Biased Growth Theory in international trade. We collected labor productivity, export and import data by using classification of manufacturing industries, for U.S...

Decomposing Trends in Inequality in Earnings into Forecastable and Uncertain Components.

A substantial empirical literature documents the rise in wage inequality in the American economy. It is silent on whether the increase in inequality is due to components of earnings that are predictable by agents or whether it is due to greater uncertainty facing them. These two sources of variability have different consequences for both aggregate and individual welfare. Using data on two cohor...

Jan Schymik: Earnings Inequality and the Global Division of Labor: Evidence from the Executive Labor Market

Many industrialized economies have seen a rapid rise in top income inequality and in the globalization of production since the 1980s. In this paper I propose an open economy model of executive pay to study how offshoring affects the pay level and incentives of top earners. The model introduces a simple principal-agent problem into a heterogeneous firm talent assignment model and endogenizes pay...
